Halloween, or Samhain as I call it, is one of my favorite holidays. While our modern society treats it like a day to dress up, scare people and eat candy (which is so much fun!), there's more to it than that.
Here’s three things you can do to celebrate the deeper holiday spirit of Halloween!
1. Connect with your ancestors. It’s a great time to think about those that have come before you and passed on. You can tell stories about them or cook their favorite foods for dinner to honor them. Some believe that this is the ideal time to try and speak with your ancestors since the veil between the world of the living and the dead is believed to be the thinnest.
2. Divine the Future. For the same reason, this the perfect day to ask the universe, “What is coming next in my life?” Samhain was seen for years by the Celts to be the marking of the new year. It’s a great time to ponder the future and where you’d like to be when winter ends. I recommend trying out the Iching, tarot cards or a pendulum to ask questions for your new year.
3. Celebrate Endings. Since this holiday is about celebrating the cycle of life and death, this is a perfect time to put any energy that’s not serving you into the proverbial coffin and bury it. Whether you feel that you’ve got some spirits in your life that you’d rather not have or just a bunch of stuff that serves your old life but not the present, now is the time to get rid of it. Symbolically, you can write down a list of what you are ready to put behind you, put it into a container and throw it away. Say a few words to the “deceased” ideas and the celebrate with a warm cup of cider or meade!
Have a wonderfully spooky day!
